Adventures

Interludes and Episodes in the Wild and Open Spaces

Two good definitions of “adventure”:

  • An adventure is when you don’t know what’s going to happen next.
  • An adventure is just something that sucks until it’s over.

At minimum, an adventure story recounts a series of extraordinary events. Good adventure writers help the reader experience the adventure through characters they describe or create. Really good writers show how the characters are transformed by experiencing the adventure.

In part, I write about my adventures just to share a good story—sometimes with pictures.

But also by this writing I am, figuratively, running my fingers over the map of my personal journey. I’m recounting where I’ve been to better understand where I am and how I got here.

Time spent in the desert, in the mountains, or in unfamiliar cities can be seen as just one way of painting markers on that map.
